Sri Lanka avoided a series whitewash by claiming a 7-wicket victory in the third and final T20I against New Zealand. This win marked their first victory on New Zealand soil in 18 years.
On Thursday in Nelson, New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first. Sri Lanka’s openers Pathum Nissanka (14) and Kusal Mendis (22) were dismissed early, leaving them at 49 runs during the powerplay. At number 3, Kusal Perera took charge, unleashing a brutal assault on the Kiwi bowlers.
Avishka Fernando contributed 17 runs from 12 balls before being dismissed. Kusal Perera continued his dominance and reached his maiden T20I century in just 44 balls, marking the fastest ever T20I century by a Sri Lankan. He finished with 101 runs off 46 balls, including 13 fours and 4 sixes, before being dismissed by Daryl Mitchell.
Sri Lanka's captain Charith Asalanka added a stormy 46 runs from 24 balls, pushing Sri Lanka to a formidable total of 218/5 in their 20 overs.
Chasing a target of 219, New Zealand began well, posting 63 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket. However, they lost their first wicket at 81 runs when Tim Robinson was dismissed for 37. Charith Asalanka then struck twice, reducing New Zealand further.
Despite efforts from Zachary Fuchs (21* from 13 balls) and Mitchell Santner (14 from 10 balls), New Zealand fell short, ending their innings at 211/7.
For Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka was the star with the ball, taking 3 wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga claimed 2 wickets, while Nuwan Thushara and Binura Fernando each picked up 1 wicket.
Sri Lanka's victory in this match helped them avoid a whitewash, and they celebrated a historic win in New Zealand after 18 years.
