In the Sydney Test, India surrendered, and Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years. However, Australian star batter Steve Smith missed reaching the 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket by just 1 run. With the series over, Smith remains stuck at 9,999 runs in his Test career.
Steve Smith missed becoming the 15th batter in Test cricket history to reach the 10,000-run milestone. He will have to wait until the end of this month, when Australia plays its first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, for his next opportunity to join the exclusive 10,000-run club.
Had he scored just 1 more run, Smith would have become the fourth Australian batsman after Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting to reach the 10,000-run mark in Tests.
Smith is also likely to captain Australia during the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. Pat Cummins may miss one Test due to taking paternity leave for the birth of his second child.
