Bangladeshs U-19 World Cup campaign ends in Super Six after defeat to England
Bangladesh’s Under-19 World Cup journey came to an end at the Super Six stage. Batting struggles followed by a composed run chase from England resulted in a seven-wicket defeat for the Young Tigers in Bulawayo, ending their tournament campaign.
After winning the toss on Monday, Bangladesh opted to bat first. However, the decision did not pay off as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were restricted to just 136 runs, a total that proved insufficient to pose a serious challenge at this stage of the competition.
Bangladesh suffered an early setback when opener Jawad Abrar returned to the pavilion cheaply. A brief partnership between Rifat Beg and Azizul Hakim Tamim attempted to stabilize the innings, but it did not last long. Rifat played aggressively, scoring 31 runs off 36 balls before getting out.
Tamim was dismissed shortly afterward, increasing the pressure on the batting side. Bangladesh then lost multiple wickets in the same over and began to slip out of the contest. Four batters were dismissed within 72 runs, while Rizan Hossain also failed to produce a significant contribution. Mohammad Abdullah showed some resistance, but he did not receive enough support from the other batters.
Towards the end, Shahriar Ahmed tried to mount a fight, but his effort was short-lived. He was dismissed as the final batter, with Bangladesh bowled out for 136.
England’s bowling attack was led by Sebastian Morgan, who picked up three wickets. Ralphie Albert and Mani Lamsden claimed two wickets each, while Alex Green, Farhan Ahmed, and James Minto took one apiece.
In reply, England lost an early wicket but quickly took control of the chase. Ben Dawkins and Ben Mayes put together a solid partnership to build the innings. Although Dawkins was dismissed, Thomas Rew took charge and guided the team alongside Mayes, effectively sealing the win.
Thomas Rew remained unbeaten on 59 runs, while Caleb Falcano finished the match late on as England secured victory with 155 balls to spare. For Bangladesh, Al Fahad claimed two wickets and Samiun Bashir Ratul took one.
With this defeat, Bangladesh’s Under-19 World Cup campaign came to an end, and their hopes of reaching the semifinals were officially dashed.
