Steve Smiths Explosive Innings Powers Sydney Sixers to Derby Win Over Thunder
Sydney Sixers emerged victorious in today’s Big Bash Sydney Derby, defeating city rivals Sydney Thunder by five wickets. While the win was significant, the real story of the match was written by two star batsmen—David Warner and Steven Smith. Both scored centuries, but it was Smith’s blistering innings that ultimately overshadowed Warner’s ton and secured the victory for Sixers. Fans also witnessed a historic over today, setting a new record for the most runs in a single over in Big Bash history.
Batting first, Thunder posted 189 runs. Warner’s unbeaten 110 off 65 balls anchored their innings and helped the team post a competitive total. In reply, Smith scored his century in just 42 balls, hitting 5 fours and 9 sixes, guiding Sixers smoothly towards victory.
The highlight came in the 12th over, when Smith single-handedly scored 32 runs, setting a new record for the most runs in a single over in Big Bash history. He struck four consecutive sixes off the first four balls, followed by a no-ball on the fifth, and a boundary off the remaining delivery. Earlier in the innings, he also smashed a 107-meter six off Nathan McAndrew, sending the ball onto the stadium roof.
This was Smith’s fourth century in Big Bash. For Warner, it was his second century of the current season. With this, Smith tops the list of century makers, while Warner and Mac Dermott each have three centuries to their name.
Meanwhile, Babar Azam’s innings was comparatively slow. During Smith’s whirlwind batting, Babar struggled to keep up, and Smith even ignored his request for a single on the last ball of the 11th over. Smith eventually finished with 100 off 41 balls, while Babar scored 47 off 40 deliveries.
