Last-Ball Six Keeps Sylhet Alive in Dramatic Win

With six runs required off the final delivery, England all-rounder Chris Woakes held his nerve and launched a towering six to hand Sylhet Titans a sensational victory. That single strike sealed a thrilling three-wicket win over Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League eliminator, keeping Sylhet’s hopes of reaching the final alive.
On Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Rangpur were sent in to bat after losing the toss and suffered an early collapse. They lost four wickets for just 29 runs, with David Malan, Towhid Hridoy, captain Litton Das and Kyle Mayers all failing to reach double figures. The early damage firmly tilted the match in Sylhet’s favour.
Mahmudullah Riyad tried to steady the innings with brief resistance, forming useful partnerships with Khushdil Shah and Nurul Hasan. However, the dismissal of both Mahmudullah and Khushdil within the first 94 runs ended Rangpur’s hopes of posting a competitive total. Rangpur eventually limped to 111 for 9 in their 20 overs.
Sylhet’s bowling was led by Khaled Ahmed, who produced a superb spell, claiming four wickets for just 14 runs in his four overs. Chris Woakes and Nasum Ahmed provided strong support, taking two wickets each to keep Rangpur under constant pressure.
Chasing a modest target, Sylhet also stumbled early. A flurry of wickets saw them reduced to 44 for 4, bringing Rangpur back into the contest. At that stage, Sam Billings and captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz rebuilt the innings with a crucial fifth-wicket partnership to steady the chase.
The match swung once again in the closing moments. After Miraz was dismissed, the equation came down to six runs off the final ball. Woakes rose to the occasion, smashing a six to carry Sylhet over the line. The win sends Sylhet Titans into the second qualifier and ends Rangpur Riders’ campaign in the playoffs.
