Shakib wanted to kick on the ground and not on the stumps
In a thrilling match between Mohammedan and Abahani during the 2021 Dhaka Premier League, Shakib Al Hasan kicked the stumps and got into a confrontation with the umpire after an LBW appeal was turned down. Shakib was protesting against poor umpiring that day, although he later acknowledged that his manner of protest was inappropriate. He intended to kick the ground in frustration, but the stumps got in the way.
When the umpire did not respond to Shakib's leg-before-wicket (LBW) appeal, Shakib lost his temper immediately. He got into an argument and kicked the stumps, breaking them. For violating the code of conduct on the field, Mohammedan's captain Shakib Al Hasan received a three-match ban and was also fined.
On Bongo BD's show 'Shakib Al Hasan, World Cup Special,' Shakib explained the unfortunate incident:
"What happened (kicking the stumps) was certainly not ideal, and it shouldn't have happened. However, it was in the heat of the moment. There was no premeditated intention. When the umpire didn't give the out, I appealed and turned around. Normally, I sometimes kick the ground in frustration. The stumps just happened to be in the way. If the stumps had been further away, I would have kicked the ground. It hit the stumps instead. Looking back now, it seems almost laughable."
