Madinson Dropped, Smiths Place in Cape Town Test in Doubt
Australia are preparing for the Cape Town Test against South Africa amid concerns over Steven Smith’s neck injury and team selection. Several changes have been made to the squad ahead of this decisive match in the series.
Opening batter Nic Maddinson’s omission has already been confirmed. Having scored 0, 48, 0 and 8 in the Test series, the batter is returning home to feature for New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match starting next Friday.
Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Sam Harper, who was brought in as cover, is also leaving South Africa to play in Victoria’s next Sheffield Shield match. With Josh Inglis recovering from injury and returning to the side, there is no longer a need for an additional wicketkeeping backup. Following Maddinson’s departure, Matt Renshaw could open the batting alongside Travis Head.
However, Australia’s biggest concern remains Steven Smith’s fitness. The star batter has been struggling with a neck injury since the Port Elizabeth Test. His place in the final XI will depend on whether he can prove his full fitness during the final training session at Cape Town’s historic Newlands ground.
During Sunday’s practice session, Smith batted for just 15 minutes against a sidearm thrower without wearing a helmet. Head coach Andrew McDonald has expressed hope that Smith will recover quickly.
If Smith ultimately misses the match, Marnus Labuschagne, whose performances have come under scrutiny recently, could retain his place in the playing XI. Although Labuschagne has failed to score a half-century in recent matches, chief selector George Bailey has praised his ability to spend time at the crease.
