Saim Ayub Dropped from Pakistans ODI Squad, Sahibzada Farhan Named Replacement
Pakistan have made a major change to their squad for the remainder of the ongoing Pakistan-England-Sri Lanka ODI tri-series. Out-of-form young top-order batter Saim Ayub has been dropped from the squad and replaced by Sahibzada Farhan.
In a press release, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) stated that, following discussions with head coach Mike Hesson, Saim Ayub himself expressed a desire to return to domestic cricket. The decision was aimed at regaining his batting form and confidence. After considering the player’s request, the PCB selection committee and team management unanimously agreed to approve it.
Ayub has scored just 21 runs in three matches so far in the tri-series. Across all formats in 2016, he played 19 matches, averaging just 16.55 and managing only one half-century.
Sahibzada Farhan, who has been brought in as Ayub’s replacement, made his ODI debut in March this year. Following Pakistan’s thrilling one-wicket victory over England last Sunday, captain Shaheen Afridi had hinted at the need for changes in the top order. The reshuffle has been made to improve the scoring rate during the powerplay and encourage more aggressive batting.
Meanwhile, although the PCB’s statement mentioned a return to domestic cricket, no domestic matches other than the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy are scheduled before the conclusion of the tri-series. Saim Ayub could return to action through Pakistan’s premier first-class tournament, which is set to begin next month.
