Tough World Test Championship Qualification Equation Motivates Shanto, Not Pressures Him

Bangladesh face a difficult road to the final of the World Test Championship (WTC), needing to win all four of their remaining Tests to stay in contention. Despite the challenging equation, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto does not consider the situation a source of mental pressure. Instead, he sees Bangladesh’s position in fourth place in the standings and their opportunity to remain in the race for a place in the Lord’s final by finishing in the top two as a great source of motivation for the team.

After a disappointing tour of the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh are now preparing to face the West Indies. The return of Taskin Ahmed to the squad after an extended absence, alongside Ebadot Hossain and Hasan Mahmud, has further strengthened the pace attack. Shanto said the fast bowlers have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the strategies required in different situations.

Speaking at a press conference about the pacers’ preparation and tactical clarity, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said, “The positive thing about our pace attack is that everyone knows their role. They also know who will play and when. They have a clear understanding of whom to use in specific situations.”

Having several options available for team selection, with every player prepared to take the field, is a major relief for the captain. Elaborating on the squad’s overall preparation and the players’ positive mindset, Shanto added, “It is a great thing that everyone in the squad is ready to play in any match of the series. They are always in a good position in terms of preparation. Having the option to select any one of them at any time is a big advantage for me.”

Bangladesh have made visible progress in their performances compared with the previous three editions of the World Test Championship. The team’s current position in fourth place in the standings has also generated greater enthusiasm among cricket fans for the longest format. Shanto views both the team’s standing and the expectations of supporters in a positive light.

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s current position in Test cricket and the importance of maintaining their established processes and training methods, Shanto shared his perspective, saying, “I don’t see it as pressure; I see it as motivation. Being in the top four is motivating me. The fact that we are creating such a position for ourselves in Test cricket is also inspiring. Since we began preparing for this series, or even when we started discussing it, our focus has been on how we have performed in the last few series and over the past few years in Test cricket.”

The Bangladesh captain has emphasised the importance of sticking to the team’s established methods and playing their natural game rather than attempting anything extraordinary on the field. Setting out his expectations for the team, he further said, “We don’t want to do anything extra; we just want to follow our own process. We are not expecting anything extraordinary from anyone. The series is certainly very important, but our goal is to stick to the things we have established. We are getting results from this process.”
