Mahela Jayawardene Parts Ways with Mumbai Indians Ahead of IPL Auction
Sri Lankan legendary former batter Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as head coach of Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the mega auction for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing an end to his association with the franchise. This was his second stint as head coach, having served in the role for the last two seasons. He previously coached the side from 2017 to 2022.
"Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now," Jayawardene said in an MI statement. "The players, coaching team, and above all the fans around the world have made this an experience I will always treasure. Together, we have shared some unforgettable moments. I want to sincerely thank Mrs. Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their unwavering trust and support over the years. I wish the franchise every success in the years ahead."
According to a Cricinfo report, the discussion regarding a change in the coaching staff arose during the 2026 season review in August. Both the senior player leadership and the franchise management collectively felt the need to bring fresh perspectives to the team. Jayawardene himself agreed with the idea of making way for younger coaches.
The incoming head coach will have the authority to decide on the remaining members of the current coaching staff, which includes assistant coach Kieron Pollard and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.
Mumbai Indians endured a disastrous campaign in IPL 2026, finishing ninth on the points table with just 4 wins from 14 matches. Consequently, Jayawardene's departure leaves the team management in a challenging position. Additionally, captain Hardik Pandya's performance and future with the franchise have come under intense scrutiny, having scored just 206 runs and taken 4 wickets in 10 matches last season.
In his first stint as head coach, Jayawardene led MI to three IPL titles (2017, 2019, and 2020). From 2022 to 2024, he served as the franchise's 'Global Head of Performance', overseeing their other teams in SA20, ILT20, and MLC.
He returned as MI's head coach in 2025, replacing Mark Boucher, but was unable to replicate his previous success. The team finished fourth in 2025 before dropping to ninth in 2026.
With the IPL retention deadline set for November 15 and the mega auction expected to take place in Goa a month later, the five-time champion franchise must act quickly to appoint a new head coach.
