West Indies Beat Pakistan to Level ODI Series 1-1
After ending an eight-year winless run in T20Is against Pakistan, West Indies have now tasted victory in the ODIs as well. Shai Hope’s side defeated Pakistan by five wickets under the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on Saturday night, marking their first ODI win over Pakistan since 2019. The series is now level at 1-1.
Batting first in the rain-affected contest, Pakistan reached 171 for 7 in 35 overs. Under DLS calculations, West Indies were set a target of 181 in the same number of overs. Powered by late fireworks from Roston Chase and Sherfane Rutherford, the hosts chased down the target with 10 balls to spare.
For Pakistan, debutant Hasan Nawaz top-scored with 36, followed by Hussain Talat’s 31. Openers Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub added 26 and 23 respectively, but the rest of the batting faltered. Jayden Seales was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, claiming 3 for 23.
The chase began poorly for the hosts, losing openers Brandon King and Evin Lewis for just 12 runs to Hasan Ali. With Keacy Carty’s dismissal at 48, West Indies were under pressure. However, captain Shai Hope (32 off 35) and Rutherford (45 off 33) revived the innings with a 54-run stand. In the decisive phase, Roston Chase (49* off 47) and Greaves (26* off 31) steered the team home. Chase’s all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
The three-match ODI series is now tied 1-1, with the decider set for tomorrow at 7:30 PM Bangladesh time at the same venue. Pakistan had won the first ODI by five wickets.
