Shariful Becomes the Most Expensive Player in DThree Trophy Points Auction, Nasir Goes Unsold
Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) new initiative, the ‘D-Three Trophy’, has begun its journey with a unique points-based auction, bringing the flavour of franchise cricket to domestic cricket. Although no money changed hands during the auction, the competition and bidding battle for players were intense. Left-arm pacer Shariful Islam became the most expensive player in the history of the auction after attracting the highest bid. Meanwhile, all-rounder Nasir Hossain failed to secure a team, leaving him with no opportunity to play in any other BCB tournament apart from the National Cricket League (NCL).
According to the auction results, Citizens Bank spent 2 crore 30 lakh points to secure Shariful. Walton signed Taskin Ahmed for 2 crore 10 lakh points, making him the second-most expensive player. Fortune spent 2 crore points to acquire in-form opening batter Tanzid Hasan Tamim. Seven Rings Cement secured Saif Hassan for 1 crore 95 lakh points, while Ace Bluestar signed pacer Hasan Mahmud for the same amount. National Test team captain Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Fortune for 1 crore 55 lakh points.
Meanwhile, two pacers who have been in high demand recently, Mustafizur Rahman and Nahid Rana, were sold for comparatively lower prices. Seven Rings Cement secured Mustafizur, a regular performer in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the Big Bash League (BBL), for 70 lakh points. Ace Bluestar acquired Nahid Rana for the same number of points.
According to BCB regulations, each franchise was allocated a total of 10 crore points to build its squad. No individual limit was imposed on the number of points that could be spent on a player, allowing franchises to allocate points according to their preferences and demand. The base prices were set at 40 lakh points for Grade A players, 30 lakh for Grade B, 20 lakh for Grade C, 10 lakh for Grade D and 5 lakh for Grade E players. However, the points have no connection to the players’ actual financial contracts. Players will receive only the match fees set by the BCB. Accordingly, the match fee has been fixed at Tk 1.5 lakh for four-day matches, Tk 1 lakh for 50-over matches and Tk 80,000 for T20 matches.
Under the BCB’s new format, the four-day and one-day editions of the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), which were previously organised separately, along with the T20 edition of the National Cricket League (NCL), have been brought under the umbrella of the D-Three Trophy. However, the traditional four-day NCL competition will continue independently under the existing format. A total of 42 matches will be played across the three formats, including 19 T20 matches, 16 one-day matches and seven four-day matches.
According to the announced schedule, the T20 competition of the D-Three Trophy will begin in Barishal on December 15. The second phase of the tournament will start at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on December 21, while the playoffs and final will once again be held in Barishal. The BCB also plans to organise the four-day competition in January 2027 and the 50-over edition in May 2027.
