Star players such as Andre Russell, Jason Holder, and Alzarri Joseph have been rested for the upcoming T20 series against South Africa. Cricket West Indies has stated that Andre Russell himself requested rest. Roston Chase has been appointed as the deputy to Rovman Powell for the series.
In addition to Russell, former captain Jason Holder has also been rested due to workload management. Holder has played five consecutive Tests for the West Indies, including matches in England and the recent series at home against South Africa.
Following their 1-0 defeat in the Test series, the West Indies will play three T20 internationals against South Africa at home, with several big names missing. Cricket West Indies announced the squad on Sunday, August 18.
Also missing from the squad is West Indies T20 World Cup vice-captain Alzarri Joseph, who was not present in the two-Test series against South Africa. Brandon King, who suffered a side strain during the Super Eight match against England in June, is still sidelined.
However, Shimron Hetmyer has been included in the squad for the Proteas series. Fabian Allen, the spin-bowling all-rounder, has returned to the squad after the disappointment of missing out on the home World Cup.
