Shadman One Run Away from Century as Bangladesh End Day 1 in Strong Position

Bangladesh finished the opening day of the Mirpur Test in a strong position, reaching 213 for 3 at stumps. Despite multiple interruptions due to poor light, the hosts remained in control of the day, thanks to a composed batting display from left-handed opener Shadman Islam. Having registered his 10th Test half-century, Shadman remained unbeaten on 99 at the close of play. He will resume batting on the second day just one run short of a century.

Bangladesh came under early pressure on Thursday morning at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur as the West Indies pacers exploited their pace and swing. The hosts lost their first wicket with just nine runs on the board when Tanzid Hasan Tamim was caught in the slips off Jayden Seales for seven.

Shadman then steadied the innings alongside Mominul Haque, putting together a 59-run partnership for the second wicket to recover from the early setback. However, Mominul, who scored 28, fell while attempting an ambitious shot, offering a catch to Shamar Joseph. Bangladesh went into the first session at 96 for 2.

After the break, Shadman completed his half-century, but captain Najmul Hossain Shanto failed to build on his start. He was trapped lbw by Jomel Warrican for 16, leaving Bangladesh at 110 for 3.

Following the third wicket, Shadman looked set to build a substantial partnership with Towhid Hridoy in the middle order. However, Hridoy had to retire hurt on 42 due to an injury, bringing his innings to a premature end.

Shadman then continued to keep the scoreboard moving alongside Litton Das, who was unbeaten on 10 at stumps.

Repeated interruptions due to fading light eventually forced the umpires to call an early end to the first day’s play. Shadman will return on the second morning with the opportunity to complete a memorable century and strengthen Bangladesh’s position in the Test.
