South Africa level series with 19-run win over New Zealand
South Africa bounced back in style to level the series with a 19-run victory over New Zealand in the fourth T20I at Sky Stadium in Wellington on Sunday. The Proteas made it 2-2 in the five-match series, setting up a decider in Christchurch.
Chasing a target of 165, New Zealand made a solid start and were in control at 88 for 3 after 10 overs. However, they lost momentum in the middle overs, suffering a collapse as wickets fell in quick succession. Eventually, the hosts were bowled out for 145 in 18.5 overs.
South Africa’s spin attack proved decisive in the victory. Captain Keshav Maharaj led from the front with an economical spell of 2 for 22 in four overs. Debutant Prenelan Subrayen also impressed, taking 2 wickets for just 13 runs in three overs. He dismissed Dane Cleaver, triggering the middle-order collapse.
Earlier, wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen top-scored for South Africa with 57 off 36 balls, laying the foundation for their total. He was eventually dismissed thanks to a brilliant catch by debutant Katene Clarke.
Among New Zealand’s bowlers, Ben Sears delivered a disciplined performance, conceding just 22 runs in his four overs. Meanwhile, South African pacer Gerald Coetzee picked up three wickets.
For the hosts, Tim Robinson was the top scorer with 32 runs, but his effort was not enough to secure victory.
The series will now be decided in Christchurch, where the two teams will face off in the fifth and final match on Wednesday.
