Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been dealt a major blow as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to injury. In a surprising yet nostalgic turn, legendary former skipper MS Dhoni has once again taken up the mantle of leadership.
To fill the void left by Gaikwad, CSK have signed 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Matre, marking the teenager’s first-ever stint in the IPL.
Ayush, regarded as one of Mumbai’s most promising young talents, had been on trial with the CSK franchise for the past two weeks. Following his impressive showing during the trials, the management decided to bring him onboard. Though he went unsold in the IPL auction at a base price of ₹30 lakh, CSK have now added him to their squad for the rest of the season.
The young batter has already made a mark in domestic cricket, playing 9 first-class matches for Mumbai, scoring two centuries and a fifty. He has also featured in 7 List A matches, with a highest score of 181 against Nagaland. Another standout innings includes a 148-run knock against Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy — highlighting his ability to play big innings.
Whether Ayush Matre will make his IPL debut in CSK’s iconic yellow jersey under the guidance of MS Dhoni is now the question on everyone’s mind.
