Sooryavanshi Sweeps Major Individual Awards Despite Missing Out on IPL Title

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may have missed out on the IPL title, but he claimed almost every major individual honour on offer. The 15-year-old won the Orange Cap as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, and the Best Emerging Player award. He amassed 776 runs in 16 innings at a remarkable strike rate of 237.30.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans fast bowler Kagiso Rabada won the Purple Cap as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker. He picked up 29 wickets in 17 matches at an economy rate of 9.68. It was Rabada’s second Purple Cap, having previously won the award in 2020 when he claimed 30 wickets for Delhi Capitals. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar finished a close second with 28 wickets.

Sooryavanshi became the first player in IPL history to win both the MVP and Best Emerging Player awards in the same season. He was also the first batter since Chris Gayle in 2011 to finish a season as both the leading run-scorer and the player with the highest strike rate (minimum 20 balls faced).

The youngster also set a new record for the most sixes in a single IPL season, smashing 72 sixes and surpassing Gayle’s previous record of 59. His outstanding performances played a key role in helping Rajasthan Royals reach the playoffs. However, their campaign ended with a defeat to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 in New Chandigarh.

Speaking after collecting his awards following the final, Sooryavanshi said, “It feels great, although there is some pressure because of all the interviews. It is a proud moment, and I will try to do even better next season. I back my game, and if the ball is there to be hit, I go all out for it.”

In the Orange Cap standings, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill finished second with 732 runs, while his opening partner B Sai Sudharsan was third with 722 runs.
