In a significant development for Bangladesh cricket, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has decided to step down from his role following a disappointing series against South Africa, where the team suffered a humiliating whitewash. Having captained the side for less than eight months, Shanto has communicated his decision to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), though he has yet to discuss the matter face-to-face with BCB president Faruk Ahmed.

The recent series highlighted a dismal performance from the Bangladesh batsmen, leading to a 7-wicket loss in the first Test at Mirpur and a staggering innings and 273 runs defeat in Chattogram. This string of defeats has prompted Shanto to reconsider his leadership role, especially in light of the team's struggles.

At a press conference following the conclusion of the series, Shanto was asked about his reasons for stepping down. He remarked, "The president has spoken with you about the captaincy. I won’t make any further comments on it here. You will likely hear something from the cricket board."

When questioned about the timing and manner of his resignation, whether it could have been handled more gracefully, Shanto responded, "Insha Allah, it will happen in a more appropriate manner in the future. I believe these things should be done through a proper process."
