IPL 2024, Points table scenario
In the era of modern cricket, characterized by big hits and spectacular sixes, the Indian Premier League (IPL) stands out as the most talked-about franchise tournament. The run-fest witnessed in the matches of this season is simply unbelievable. Many matches have seen scores surpassing 250, with runs soaring up to 287, which is the highest in the history of IPL cricket.
In IPL, just like how sixes rain down in twenty-two yards, the entire season revolves around the fierce battle on the points table. Teams earn 2 points for every win in a match. The assault of these points transforms into a fierce competition on the ladder at the end of the league round. The top two teams on the table secure a spot in the qualifiers. The teams at positions three and four play in the Eliminator.
In other words, the first two teams on the points table get two chances to make it to the final. The first and second-ranked teams directly advance to the final by winning the Qualifier match. On the other hand, the team that wins the Eliminator between the third and fourth-ranked teams plays against the losing team from the Qualifier. The winner of the Second Qualifier secures a ticket to the final. Therefore, the IPL points table holds significant importance. It's not just about winning or losing matches; even the net run rate can alter your team's fate at any moment.
After the 65th league match of IPL 2024 between Rajasthan and Punjab Kings in Guwahati, let's take a look at how many points each team has accumulated and their positions on the table. So far, two teams have secured qualification for the playoffs. They are the teams positioned at numbers one and two on the table.
Despite losing to Rajasthan by 5 wickets, Punjab Kings, with 16 points from 13 matches, hold the second position on the table. Kolkata Knight Riders lead the league table with 19 points from 13 matches.
Chennai Super Kings, led by Mustafizur Rahman, sit in third place on the league table with 14 points from 13 matches. Although he returned to his country after playing in the IPL in May, Sunrisers Hyderabad are placed fourth on the table.
Delhi Capitals finished their league campaign earlier, accumulating 14 points from 14 matches, placing them fifth on the table. With 12 points from 13 matches, Rajasthan Royals sit at sixth position on the points table. Lucknow, Gujarat, Punjab, and Mumbai Indians occupy the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth positions, respectively.
The 17th season of IPL 2024 kicked off on March 22 and will continue until May 26. Similar to previous editions, this season's points table has witnessed intense competition, with cricket enthusiasts already enjoying the thrilling battles.
