Towhid Hridoy Suspended Again Amid BCB Controversy
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has once again suspended Mohammedan Sporting Club captain Towhid Hridoy for one match, reigniting controversy over his earlier suspension reduction. As a result, Hridoy will not be allowed to play in tomorrow’s Super League clash against Gazi Group Cricketers, scheduled for April 26.
The issue stems from an incident during the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match against Abahani Limited on April 12 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Hridoy was found guilty of misconduct toward match officials and was initially handed a one-match suspension along with four demerit points.
However, after he publicly criticized the umpires the following day, the punishment was extended to a two-match ban and a fine of BDT 80,000. According to the decision, Hridoy was supposed to miss the first two Super League matches.
He sat out the April 17 match against Legends of Rupganj, but controversially returned to lead Mohammedan in their game against Agrani Bank last Sunday. Reports suggest that pressure from Mohammedan Sporting Club led the BCB’s Umpires Committee to allow Hridoy to play, a move that triggered widespread criticism for violating suspension protocol.
In response to the backlash, the BCB has now reinstated the remaining match of Hridoy’s suspension. As a result, the in-form batter and stand-in captain for Tamim Iqbal will miss the upcoming key fixture.
The controversy has stirred tensions within the BCB and the local cricketing community. In light of recent events and multiple incidents involving his teammates, veteran cricketer Tamim Iqbal is expected to address the media in a press conference later today.
The unfolding drama has raised serious questions about the enforcement of disciplinary measures and the independence of BCB's regulatory bodies.
