Thisara Perera expressed his surprise at being appointed Dhaka Capitals captain
In a surprising turn of events,Thisara Perera has been appointed as the captain of the Dhaka Capitals for the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season, rather than Liton Kumar Das. Liton, who served as the stand-in captain during Bangladesh's recent series against the West Indies and led the Comilla Victorians last year, was widely expected to take charge of the Dhaka franchise. However, the franchise has chosen the Sri Lankan all-rounder Perera for the role.
At a press conference on Sunday, Thisara Perera expressed his surprise at being appointed captain, saying, "I never thought I would be made the captain. They have trusted me, and that's why I have been given the responsibility."
Despite the unexpected appointment, Perera is eager to embrace his role as captain. He added, "It feels great to be the captain in such a franchise league. I have played in the BPL many times, but this is my first time as the captain. However, it's not new to me; I have captained many franchise teams before. This is a new franchise, and I am excited to do well."
Even though Liton will not be leading the team, Perera emphasized that the star batter remains the most important player in the squad. He said, "Liton is the most crucial player for our team. When he keeps scoring, it is hard to stop him. He has done wonderfully in the past few years. However, we must also acknowledge our shortcomings. I can say without a doubt that Liton will be our anchor player."
When asked about any changes in the BPL, Perera noted that while he hasn't seen major changes, the league is continuously improving. "I don’t see much change, but the BPL is improving with each passing year. I’ve been playing in the league for many years and can see the progress every season. This year, everything seems to be well-organized, especially our team. For foreign players, it’s excellent. Every time I come to Bangladesh, from the travel to the hotels, everything is perfect. For a foreigner, this is a great experience. We are well-prepared for this season."
The Dhaka Capitals will be hoping for a successful season under Perera's leadership as they compete for the BPL title.
