The sudden Test retirement of India’s modern greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma shocked not only their fans but the entire cricketing world. Both announced their departure earlier this May, just ahead of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Initially, many assumed recent failures had influenced their decision, but former Indian cricketer Chetan Ghambhir has offered a different take.

According to Ghambhir, the duo actually wanted to continue, but internal politics within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) forced them out.
“Virat could have easily played for a few more years. But the board and selectors had a different plan, so both were asked to step aside,” he said.

He further added, “Legends who contributed so much should have been given a dignified farewell. Instead, they were pushed into retirement due to petty politics.”

Ghabbir also pointed fingers at the Board of Selectors and events surrounding the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, stressing that internal conflicts were the root cause of the controversial decision.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife that both Kohli and Rohit could soon bid farewell to ODIs as well. If so, it would shatter their dream of playing the 2027 World Cup. Considering their status as two of India’s most successful ODI cricketers, such a move would deal a major blow to Indian cricket.
