David Boon to Become Cricket Australias Interim Chairman

Former Australian star batter David Boon is set to take over as the interim chairman of Cricket Australia following the organization’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on October 28. The change comes after current chairman Mike Baird decided not to seek another term and announced that he would step down following the AGM.

Current chairman Mike Baird has been on the Cricket Australia board for the past six years and has served as chairman since February 2023. Meanwhile, former ICC match referee David Boon joined the CA board in February 2025 and previously served for many years on the Cricket Tasmania board. The process of appointing a new permanent chairman is expected to be completed within the next few months following the AGM.

Speaking about his new role, interim chairman David Boon said, “It is a great honour for me to take on the role of interim chairman of Cricket Australia at such an exciting and challenging time for the game. I look forward to leading the Cricket Australia board. We will continue to make decisions that ensure the long-term growth and development of cricket in this country and further strengthen Australia’s position on the international stage. As a dedicated supporter of Australian cricket, from grassroots clubs to Cricket Australia and ICC boardrooms, I would like to sincerely thank Mike for his commitment and leadership. Everyone involved in cricket should thank him for leading Australian cricket, facing the many difficult decisions of the current era and playing an influential role at the ICC.”

Speaking about his decision to step down, outgoing chairman Mike Baird said, “After much consideration, I have decided to step down as chairman and director of Cricket Australia. I am very pleased that David Boon has agreed to take on the role of interim chairman while the formal process of selecting our new chairman takes place. I will complete the transition process with David over the coming weeks. I am extremely proud to have served on the Cricket New South Wales board and on the Cricket Australia board for the past six years, including almost four years as chairman. I would like to thank the fans, volunteers, club cricketers and umpires who are the lifeblood of our game. This year, Cricket Australia will report record growth in revenue, profit, attendances at venues and broadcast audiences. Most importantly, participation in our game has increased by 40 percent over the past four years. I believe the recent decisions taken regarding the Big Bash League have secured the long-term future of cricket.”
