Controversial Umpiring in Emerging Asia Cup: India vs Afghanistan Match
Umpiring decisions have come under scrutiny once again in the Emerging Asia Cup, with controversy erupting during the India-Afghanistan semifinal match. The tension escalated on the field, leading to a brief stoppage in play before the match referee had to step in to manage the situation.
In the second semifinal held at Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman, the controversy centered around the dismissal of Afghanistan opener Zubaid Akbari. In the 14.1 over, a delivery from Akeeb Khan touched the edge of Akbari's bat and was caught by wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh. Despite what appeared to be a superb catch, the on-field umpire declared Akbari not out, ignoring the appeal.
Indian players expressed their discontent with the umpire's decision, prompting the on-field umpire to refer the matter to the TV umpire. It's important to note that the Emerging Asia Cup does not utilize the DRS system, making the on-field umpire's call final.
After reviewing the video replay, the TV umpire ultimately declared Akbari out, sparking outrage from the Afghan team. They argued that, due to the absence of DRS in the tournament, it was inappropriate for the decision to be overturned under pressure from Indian players.
Zubaid Akbari, who scored 64 runs off 41 balls, had to leave the field after the contentious decision. Despite benefiting from this umpiring controversy, India could not secure a win, falling short at 186 runs in response to Afghanistan's 206. Consequently, Afghanistan triumphed by 20 runs and advanced to the final, where they will face Sri Lanka.
