Tri-Nation Series Equation, How Bangladesh Can Reach the Final

Zimbabwe’s massive 158-run defeat to Afghanistan in the ongoing tri-nation ODI series in Abu Dhabi has made Bangladesh’s path to the final somewhat easier, although the qualification scenario remains complicated. Afghanistan’s emphatic victory has kept the Tigers’ hopes of reaching the final alive through the net run rate equation.

Afghanistan currently sit at the top of the points table with one win from one match and a net run rate of +3.160. Zimbabwe are in second place with one win and one defeat from two matches, recording a net run rate of -0.590. Meanwhile, Bangladesh are at the bottom of the table after losing their opening match, with a net run rate of -1.980.

Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in the final match of the group stage tomorrow. To qualify for the final, the Tigers’ primary objective is to overtake Zimbabwe on net run rate and finish second in the standings.

If Bangladesh bat first, they must defeat Afghanistan by at least 41 runs to secure a place in the final. Regardless of the target Bangladesh set, maintaining a victory margin of at least 41 runs will be essential.

On the other hand, if Bangladesh bat second and chase a target, calculating the required overs will be a challenging task. For instance, if Afghanistan score 301 runs, the Tigers must chase down the target within 42.2 overs.

If Afghanistan set Bangladesh a target of 251 runs, the Tigers must reach that total within 41.3 overs to surpass Zimbabwe’s net run rate. Meanwhile, if Afghanistan are restricted to 101 runs, Bangladesh must complete the chase within 37.2 overs.

At the end of the group stage, no team has mathematically secured a place in the final with absolute certainty. However, thanks to their significantly superior net run rate, Afghanistan remain in the safest and most favourable position. Nevertheless, an extraordinary defeat by a substantial margin could still change their fate.
