Bangladesh were bowled out for just 172 while chasing Zimbabwe’s target of 272 in the ongoing tri-nation series. Following the team’s crushing 99-run defeat, experienced pacer Taskin Ahmed directly blamed the batting unit for the disappointing performance, saying the team had failed to give itself a realistic chance of winning.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Taskin said the target set by Zimbabwe was achievable and discussed the conditions and Bangladesh’s batting failure.
“270 was definitely a chaseable total. It would have been a different story if we were playing against Zimbabwe on their home ground, where they had even put Australia under pressure. But on this pitch, we should have chased down the target. We simply didn’t play well at all. We should have been able to get past that total, but unfortunately, we couldn’t even build a partnership.”
The pace bowler identified the failure to build meaningful partnerships as one of the main reasons behind the defeat. He believes the batters had the opportunity to take control of the match and guide the team to victory.
“From a batting perspective, I think this was a match our batters should have won for us. Unfortunately, they couldn’t do that. However, we still have one match left.”
A review of Bangladesh’s recent performances suggests that the team has become increasingly reliant on its bowlers at the international level. While the bowling unit has shown relatively better consistency, Taskin expressed his frustration with the batters’ repeated mistakes and poor decisions.
“The same kinds of mistakes are being repeated in batting. Compared to that, our bowling has been somewhat more consistent.”
Taskin further pointed to the batters’ inability to read match situations despite possessing the necessary skills. He noted that every batter in the squad had proven their ability in the past but stressed that the team often collapses under pressure.
“The biggest issue is that we are struggling a bit to understand match situations, because everyone has the skills. Those who play or watch cricket know that every one of our batters has proved themselves in the past. But as a team, sometimes we collapse very quickly when we come under a little pressure. We need to get out of this situation. If we want to become a top team, we must change this mentality, one way or another.”
