Bangladesh Face Financial Penalty After Zimbabwe Defeat
Bangladesh have been handed a financial penalty following their disappointing performance in the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series. The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed the fine after the team failed to complete their overs within the stipulated time during their 99-run defeat against Zimbabwe.
According to an ICC statement, Bangladesh captain Towhid Hridoy and each member of the team have been fined 5 per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over rate. The sanction was imposed because Bangladesh were one over short of the required rate during their fielding innings. Bangladesh captain Towhid Hridoy admitted the offence after the match, meaning no formal hearing was necessary.
After losing the toss in Mirpur, Bangladesh took the field but failed to restrict the visitors, with Zimbabwe posting 271 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. Bangladesh’s batting lineup then collapsed during the chase. The hosts were bowled out for just 172 in 33.4 overs, suffering a comprehensive defeat.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, teams are fined 5 per cent of their players’ match fees for every over they fall short of the required over rate. Match referee David Gilbert confirmed the sanction following a joint charge brought by on-field umpires Allahudien Paleker and Izatullah Safi, third umpire Ahsan Raza, and fourth umpire Ahmed Shah Durrani.
