Bangladesh Struggles After Winning Toss on Day 1 of Second Test Against West Indies
After suffering a heavy defeat in Antigua, Bangladesh aimed to level the series in the second Test at Jamaica's Sabina Park. Winning the toss, Bangladesh chose to bat first, but once again, their top order faced early setbacks. After Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mominul Haque was dismissed by Kemar Roach. While Joy scored some runs, Mominul departed without contributing. However, Sadman Islam stood firm, reaching an unbeaten 50 runs by the end of the day.
At the close of the first day's play, Bangladesh had scored 69 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 30 overs. Sadman Islam, who replaced Zakir Hasan in the playing XI after his poor performance in the previous Test, showcased resilience with a solid half-century. He was joined by Shahadat Hossain, who contributed 12 runs during the final phase of the day's play.
Disrupted Day 1 Due to Weather Conditions
The start of the second Test was delayed due to the wet outfield at Sabina Park. The scheduled toss had to be postponed, but despite the delay, Bangladesh managed to bat after winning the toss. They were able to play the final 30 overs of the day's play.
In the early part of the day, Bangladesh lost two wickets within the first 7 overs, with the score reading just 10 runs.
Early Breakthroughs by Kemar Roach
Kemar Roach proved to be a major challenge for Bangladesh's top order. The opening batsman Mahmudul Hasan Joy failed to handle Roach's new ball, getting caught by the wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva for just 3 runs. Joy had been struggling in the previous Test as well, and this dismissal broke the 8-run opening partnership.
Next, Mominul Haque, the experienced No. 3 batsman, failed to provide stability. He too was caught by Da Silva off Roach’s delivery, falling for a duck. Roach struck twice in quick succession, dismissing both openers in consecutive overs.
A Solid Partnership Between Sadman and Shahadat
Despite the early wickets, Bangladesh managed to steady the ship thanks to a solid partnership between Sadman Islam and Shahadat Hossain. The two players put together a defiant 59-run partnership, successfully seeing through the rest of the session. Both batsmen played cautiously, ensuring they stayed at the crease until the close of play, leaving Bangladesh at 69/2 at the end of the day.
Despite the tough start, Bangladesh will look to build on this foundation in the coming days. They will hope Sadman Islam can continue his good form and guide the team to a competitive total.
