The Bangladeshi Coach Tahmid Islam Behind Sam Konstas’ Success
Sam Konstas made his debut for Australia against India in the Boxing Day Test, creating ripples in the cricketing world with his aggressive batting. The young opener’s knock of 60 runs off 65 balls captured everyone’s attention.
In preparation for facing India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Konstas sought the help of his personal coach, Tahmid Islam, a former Bangladeshi first-class cricketer (as reported by The Age). A product of Sydney’s Cranbrook School, Konstas has benefitted from Tahmid’s coaching since childhood.
While former Australian Test player Shane Watson has also contributed to Konstas’ development, he primarily relies on Tahmid to sharpen his skills ahead of major competitions. According to a source from the Australian team, "Konstas didn’t have the opportunity to train extensively with Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald or assistant coach Michael Di Venuto. Therefore, he requested permission to have his personal coach with him for the Boxing Day Test, which the management approved."
Tahmid Islam commented on Konstas’ preparation, saying, “We have worked hard to improve his game. I focus on the finer aspects of his technique and making his shots more aggressive. Meanwhile, Watson emphasizes mental resilience, drawing from his vast experience. His performance in practice matches against India at just 19 shows he is ready to embark on a bright journey with Australia.”
Just a few years ago, Sam Konstas was playing backyard cricket with his brother on Christmas Eve. Now, the 19-year-old Australian cricketer has taken on one of the world’s most formidable pacers, Jasprit Bumrah, with commanding batting—all with the guidance of a Bangladeshi coach.
