Uncertainty Looms Over BCB Presidency, Aminul Islam Bulbul Ready to Take Charge
The leadership of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is on the brink of a major shake-up as uncertainty surrounds the future of current president Faruk Ahmed. Amid reported dissatisfaction from the interim government, speculation is growing that former national captain and Bangladesh’s first Test centurion Aminul Islam Bulbul may be appointed as the next BCB president.
According to multiple sources, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, the advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has informed Faruk Ahmed that the government no longer wants him to continue in his role. However, any forced removal could trigger sanctions from the International Cricket Council (ICC), which strictly prohibits political interference in cricket boards.
Aminul Islam Bulbul, in an interview with leading national daily Prothom Alo, confirmed that he is open to taking on the responsibility if asked.
"I have not yet been officially asked to become the BCB president. I wasn’t part of the recent meeting between the sports advisor and Faruk Ahmed. But I was contacted around 10–15 days ago by representatives from the advisor’s office. They mentioned a potential temporary role in Bangladesh cricket, and I agreed.”
He further added:
“I have no intention of holding a long-term position in the BCB. Perhaps it sounds emotional, but when a country needs a soldier, he doesn’t think about personal gain. The work comes first. I’m ready to take on any responsibility for the sake of Bangladesh cricket.”
Although Faruk Ahmed has not yet resigned, he has reportedly requested a few days from the government to reach a final decision. If he resigns voluntarily, the possibility of ICC sanctions can be avoided. However, any forced removal could mirror the recent situation in Sri Lanka, where political interference led to suspension from the ICC.
As the cricketing fraternity watches closely, all eyes are now on Faruk Ahmed’s next move—and potentially, the beginning of a new chapter under Aminul Islam Bulbul’s leadership.
