Bangladesh has been set a daunting target of 515 runs to win the Chennai Test, with nearly two and a half days of play remaining. Achieving this monumental target would etch a historic chapter in their cricketing journey.
The Bangladesh openers provided a flying start, with Zakir Hasan and Sadman Islam accumulating 56 runs before the tea break, having faced 13 overs. This partnership marks Bangladesh's first 50-run opening stand against India on their home ground.
As they embark on the chase for 515 runs, Zakir struck a boundary off Jasprit Bumrah on the second ball of the innings and followed it up with another on the fifth delivery of the over. The openers showcased aggressive batting from the outset, putting pressure on the Indian pace attack while remaining cautious at the start.
India declared their second innings at 287 runs, having taken a lead of 514 runs. Historically, Bangladesh has never won a match with a target exceeding 400 runs, with 20 such instances; they have managed one draw but have lost the other 19.
With the fourth and fifth days likely favoring bowlers, Bangladesh will need to score quickly to stay in contention. If they succeed, it would be a groundbreaking achievement, as no team has ever won a Test match with a target higher than 418 runs, a record set by West Indies against Australia in 2003. Bangladesh now faces the monumental challenge of rewriting history.
