BCB president's take on NAGAD ad controversy

The President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Nazmul Hasan Papon, addressed the recent controversy surrounding the advertisement featuring Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, and Mehidi Hasan Miraz.

Advertising for cricketers is not uncommon, and Bangladesh cricket and players are no strangers to it. However, the type and presentation of advertisements always hold significance. It's natural for a cricketer or an associated individual to be aware of these aspects. Understanding the type of advertisement, the reactions it may evoke, and whether it aligns with principles and ethics is essential.

Recently, controversy emerged over the involvement of four cricketers in an advertisement for a digital financial service provider (Nagad). Their advertisement sparked debate and criticism. This kind of controversy is not new in Bangladesh cricket. Such debates have not yet become prevalent in the cricketing circle. However, Tamim and the others have found themselves at the center of such advertisement-related discussions.

Addressing these discussions today in Mirpur, the President of BCB, Nazmul Hasan, stated, "I haven't seen that ad yet. But I heard someone say that such an ad has been made. I said I need to know first; I have to sit with the board. If there is a violation of rules, then the board will make the decision. This is the number one rule."

"Number two, no ad, drama, or anything should be made that can turn cricket or cricketers into a laughingstock or belittle them. This is my statement. If there is any discrepancy, the board will look into it."

Nazmul Hasan hasn't seen the advertisement yet. However, if the board feels there's an issue with the whole matter, they will take necessary actions. The question arises regarding penalties. Nazmul Hasan stated, "If penalties can be imposed, it's good. But where does that happen? If penalties are removed from that format, then nothing will be achieved. What can be worse than more severe penalties?"
