Afghanistan claimed the tri-nation ODI series title with a commanding victory over Zimbabwe in the final at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Maintaining their dominance throughout the tournament, the Afghans comfortably secured the trophy with another convincing performance.
In Friday’s title-deciding match, Zimbabwe’s batting lineup crumbled under Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. Sikandar Raza’s side was bowled out for just 169 runs, a total that proved far from sufficient to challenge the opposition.
Chasing a modest target of 170, Afghanistan’s batters made a confident start. Opening batter Ibrahim Zadran played a responsible innings to accelerate the team’s progress towards victory, bringing up his second half-century of the tournament.
An important 82-run partnership between Ibrahim and captain Rahmat Shah for the second wicket put Afghanistan firmly in control of the match. Although Rahmat Shah departed just as victory seemed within reach, his dismissal did little to disrupt Afghanistan’s march towards the title.
Afghanistan eventually reached the target in the 35th over, losing just three wickets, with Hashmatullah Shahidi sealing the victory with an elegant boundary. Ibrahim Zadran remained unbeaten on 70 as Afghanistan wrapped up the match with a substantial margin in terms of overs remaining.
Bangladesh had faced a similar situation in their bid to reach the final. After restricting the Tigers to 160 runs, Afghanistan secured a comprehensive seven-wicket victory in just 35.3 overs. Against Zimbabwe in the final, the Afghans followed a similar path, needing only 34.3 overs to seal the win.
Earlier, in the second match of the league stage, Afghanistan had piled up an imposing total of 294 runs against Zimbabwe before dismissing their opponents for just 136. As a result, both of the other teams in the tournament struggled to cope with Afghanistan’s strength and dominance throughout the series.
