Repeating the Same Mistakes, Towhid Hridoy Under Fire After Batting Collapse Against Afghanistan
Bangladesh’s campaign in the ODI tri-series came to an end following consecutive disappointing performances on the international stage. After suffering a heavy 99-run defeat against Zimbabwe, Towhid Hridoy’s side slumped to another defeat, this time losing to Afghanistan by seven wickets, as the familiar batting failures resurfaced.
After the match, Bangladesh’s stand-in captain openly expressed his frustration with the batters’ irresponsible approach, blaming their failure for the team’s disastrous performance. He admitted that Bangladesh had fallen at least 100 runs short of a competitive total.
Having unexpectedly taken over the captaincy for the series following regular skipper Litton Das’s injury, Hridoy also voiced his disappointment at the team’s inability to correct its recurring mistakes. Highlighting the ineffective performances of the top-order batters, the Bangladesh captain said,
“Honestly, we are repeating the same mistakes over and over again. The batting unit has made the same mistakes once again. We lost a few wickets early on, and that was the main reason for the defeat. We have discussed this as well. However, the top-order collapse was the main reason. We will work on it.”
While expressing hope that Bangladesh would recover from their failures in the shorter format and perform better in upcoming major tournaments, the captain also acknowledged the areas where the team needs improvement. Hridoy expressed optimism about making a strong comeback in the next tournament on home soil, stating,
“There is a lot to learn from this series. We need to improve in certain areas, both in batting and even in fielding. We still have time. The Asia Cup will be held in our country again. Hopefully, we will bounce back.”
Responding to the disappointment over Bangladesh’s low scores among the board and supporters, Hridoy delivered a stern assessment, stressing that the total was far below what the pitch and match conditions demanded. Placing the responsibility for scoring big runs firmly on the top order, he concluded,
“Not 40 or 50 runs. We were at least 100 runs short. It was a very good wicket for batting. The top order needs to score big runs.”
