Chattogram witnessed a night that blended records with renewed confidence for Bangladesh. In the opening T20I of the three-match series, the hosts secured a convincing 6-wicket win over New Zealand, with Towhid Hridoy’s unbeaten half-century proving decisive.
Chasing a target of 183, Bangladesh approached the innings with calculated aggression. Maintaining composure in the closing stages, Hridoy guided the team home, sealing victory with 12 balls to spare. His responsible knock made the chase look far more comfortable than it initially seemed.
With this win, Bangladesh registered their highest successful run chase against New Zealand in T20Is. The previous record stood at 135 runs in 2023. It also marked Bangladesh’s fifth T20I win over the Kiwis, with most of those victories coming while chasing.
Earlier, Bangladesh captain Liton Kumar Das won the toss and opted to field first. New Zealand suffered an early setback when opener Tim Robinson was run out in just the second over, courtesy of a direct hit from Hridoy. However, Katene Clarke and Dane Cleaver steadied the innings afterward.
The duo added 88 runs for the second wicket, helping New Zealand recover from early pressure. Interestingly, both batters scored identical 51 runs, though at different strike rates—one off 37 balls and the other off just 28 deliveries, accelerating the innings effectively.
Despite losing momentum towards the end, New Zealand posted a competitive 182 for 6 in their 20 overs. Rishad Hossain was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with two wickets, while others chipped in with one each. Ultimately, Bangladesh’s batters took control, scripting a memorable victory.
