Shoaib Akhtar Denies Reports and Rumors of Joining PCB
Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has dismissed reports claiming that he is set to become the chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team, calling the reports completely baseless and false. The former pacer, famously known as the ‘Rawalpindi Express,’ made it clear that he has no interest whatsoever in taking up any position or responsibility with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Following Pakistan’s 3-0 Test series defeat to England at home, reports emerged of major changes being considered within the team’s coaching and selection setup. Shoaib Akhtar’s name subsequently came into strong consideration for the position of chief selector. Media reports also suggested that he had been in contact with the current PCB administration led by chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
However, when asked about the matter during a live program on PTV Sports, Shoaib Akhtar rejected all the speculation. He recalled that his mother had advised him to stay away from the PCB and its internal politics. Akhtar said, “There is no truth to these reports; they are all speculation. I remain firm on my previous stance and continue to follow the advice my mother gave me.”
The former pacer, who is currently in the United States on a personal trip, also revealed that he had not discussed the matter with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. He said, “I want what is best for Pakistan cricket. It is possible to serve the country’s cricket in many other ways without taking up any position through the PCB. I want to contribute in that way.”
It is worth noting that the legendary pacer represented Pakistan in 46 Tests, 163 One-Day Internationals, and 15 T20 matches. He has also spoken out on several occasions about irregularities within the board and the political situation surrounding Pakistan cricket. His latest comments come amid another period of frequent changes in Pakistan cricket, with the PCB repeatedly changing captains and selectors.
