On Tuesday at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, New Zealand defeated Canada by 8 wickets, securing their place in the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Canada put up a strong batting performance, scoring 173/4 in 20 overs. The highlight was Yuvraj Samra, who scored his first T20 World Cup century with 110 runs off 65 balls, including 11 fours and 6 sixes. Dilpreet Bajwa also contributed 36 runs off 39 balls.

Canada reached 116/0 in 13.6 overs, maintaining a run rate above eight per over. However, a late collapse in the final overs limited them to 173/4.

Chasing the target, New Zealand faced early pressure when Tim Seifert and Finn Allen were dismissed, leaving the team at 30/2. However, in the middle overs, they recovered strongly, moving from 60/2 to 132/2.

Rachin Ravindra scored an unbeaten 59 off 39 balls, while Glenn Phillips reached his half-century in just 22 balls—the fastest by a New Zealand batter in a T20 World Cup since 2007—and finished unbeaten on 76 off 36 balls, including 4 fours and 6 sixes.

Their 100-run third-wicket partnership controlled the run rate, removing any need for late-innings risks. Canada’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow, allowing New Zealand to chase down the target comfortably, finishing at 176/2 in 15.1 overs.
