BPL Faces Setback Due to Rajshahi's Actions, BCB President Vows to Improve Image
After a political shift, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is being organized after overcoming many challenges. However, the newly formed franchise, Durbar Rajshahi, has damaged the reputation of the BPL both domestically and internationally by failing to pay its players. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President, Faruk Ahmed, has stated that such issues will not be allowed to happen again in the next season of the BPL.
In a press conference on Saturday, Faruk Ahmed admitted that Rajshahi's actions have harmed the image of the BPL. He said, "What Rajshahi has done is enough to ruin a tournament. But five months ago, the situation was different. At that time, we needed to be informed whether the BPL would happen or not. The image has been damaged, and I admit that. However, we will come out of this situation. You will see in the next BPL."
Later, the BCB president discussed the possibility of handing over the responsibility of organizing the BPL to a management company, similar to the early days of the tournament. He also shared the Board's future plans for the BPL in the coming years.
"There are many positive aspects," he said. "We have seen who our real competition is when it comes to organizing a franchise tournament. If there is no schedule conflict with the (UAE) ILT20, it will be much better. We are thinking about handing over the BPL organization to a management company. We have figured out what needs to be done. Even if we have five teams, we won’t need to search for anyone. We have found a window. It won't happen in the first or second year, but you will see profits in the third year. We need to give it time."
Despite the many setbacks, the BCB President highlighted the positive aspects as well. "We must understand what challenges we faced in this edition. 90% of tickets have been sold (worth 10 crore Taka). Runs are being scored on the field. Good games are being played. These positive aspects are what you should focus on."
