Following the tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebration — which claimed 11 lives and left many injured — Bengaluru Police have filed an FIR against the RCB franchise, event partner DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), which manages the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Police stated that they had not granted permission to RCB to organize the event at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite this, RCB and the associated organizers went ahead with the celebration, defying police orders.
The FIR includes six charges under the Indian Penal Code, including:
Section 105 – Culpable homicide not amounting to murder
Section 118 – Causing grievous hurt
Section 115 – Causing hurt by dangerous means
Section 132 – Obstructing public servants in discharge of duty
Section 125 – Acts endangering life or personal safety
Section 190 – Unlawful assembly
The complaint was lodged by Inspector Girish E.K. of the Cubbon Park Police Station.
According to the police report, RCB had announced free public entry via social media on June 4. The news rapidly spread through TV channels and social media platforms, drawing a massive crowd. Despite repeated police warnings and lack of official permission, KSCA and DNA Entertainment went ahead with the event.
Although the stadium's capacity is around 30,000 to 35,000, more than 100,000 people reportedly showed up. Chaos began around 3:10 PM when the gates opened, leading to the deadly stampede.
The tragedy resulted in 11 deaths and 64 injuries, including police personnel. Public property was also damaged in the commotion.
In response, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the formation of an investigation committee and directed the immediate arrest of all responsible parties. He also ordered the suspension of the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and the concerned local inspector.
On Thursday, the Karnataka government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a full probe into the incident. Additionally, both the state government and RCB have pledged ₹10 lakh compensation for each victim’s family and committed to covering the full medical expenses of the injured.
As of now, RCB has not released any official statement on the incident.
