"Why Play in the Same Tournament If You Don’t Play Bilaterally?" — Azharuddin Questions India-Pakistan Participation

Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin has raised eyebrows over the participation of India and Pakistan in the same multi-nation tournaments despite the two teams not engaging in bilateral series due to political tensions.

Speaking to the media, Azharuddin said,

"If India and Pakistan don't play bilateral series due to political reasons, then what’s the logic behind playing in the same tournaments like the Asia Cup or World Cups?"

His comments come at a time when the anticipation around the India vs Pakistan clash in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 is building rapidly. The two teams, although not meeting in any bilateral series since 2012–13, continue to face off in ICC and ACC events, attracting massive global viewership.

Azharuddin’s statement reignites the longstanding debate — should cricket be separated from politics, or should consistency be maintained in how the nations engage on the field?
