South Africa Tops World Test Championship Points Table, India Drops to 3rd Place
South Africa has climbed to the top of the World Test Championship points table after defeating Sri Lanka by 109 runs. This shift has caused India to drop to 3rd place, ending their long-standing run at the top. India's position now hinges entirely on their performance in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy to determine if they can make it to the final.
On Monday, South Africa's victory over Sri Lanka pushed them to the top of the points table. In the 2023-15 World Test Championship cycle, South Africa has won 6 out of 10 matches and drawn 1. Their points percentage now stands at 63.33%. Australia, currently in 2nd place, has a points percentage of 60.71%, while India's percentage is 57.29%.
India now finds itself in a tough spot in the race for the final. Both South Africa and Australia have relatively clearer paths ahead. South Africa only needs to win one of their two remaining home matches against Pakistan to almost guarantee their place in the final.
Australia, meanwhile, is in a strong position. If they beat India in the ongoing series, they will significantly boost their chances. Even if they don't win, they still have a chance in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
India's road to the final is much more difficult. To secure a spot, Rohit Sharma's team must win all three of their upcoming matches against Australia.
