Australia Clinches 14 Consecutive Wins with Headingley Victory

The reigning ICC World Cup 2023 champions, Australia, remain unbeatable in the 50-over format. With a 2-0 lead in the bilateral series against England, the Aussies have now gone 14 consecutive matches without a loss in this format.

This marks the second-longest winning streak in ODI history. Australia also holds the top spot, having won 21 consecutive ODIs in 2003 under the leadership of Ricky Ponting.

When combining both men's and women's cricket, the record still belongs to the Australian women's team, which won 26 matches between 2018 and 2021.

After losses to India and South Africa in the 2023 World Cup, Australia bounced back and never looked back. They won nine consecutive matches to secure the title.

Following that, they defeated the West Indies 3-0, bringing their winning streak to 12. With two victories over England, the total now stands at 14. Sri Lanka had previously won 13 consecutive matches in 2023.

It’s worth mentioning that Australia had a shaky start at Headingley on Saturday when England rattled their top order. However, Alex Carey’s 74 off 67 balls helped Australia reach a total of 270.

In response, the English batters had no answer to the Aussie pace attack. They lost five wickets for just 65 runs. Although Jamie Smith’s 49 and some contributions from the lower order helped England cross 200, they were eventually bowled out for 202 in 40.2 overs, giving Australia a 68-run victory.

The third ODI of the five-match series will take place on September 24 at Chester-le-Street.
