Markram conveyed relief at Shakib's absence
Aiden Markram has been appointed as the captain of the South African team for the upcoming Test match in Dhaka, following the absence of regular captain Temba Bavuma. Speaking at a press conference in Mirpur the day before the match, Markram expressed the team’s desire to play good cricket despite the challenging conditions in Bangladesh.
Markram acknowledged the significance of not having to face Shakib Al Hasan, whom he referred to as a "world-class" player. Shakib was initially part of the Bangladesh squad but has returned home, prompting selectors to consider alternatives. Markram conveyed relief at Shakib's absence, noting, “I won't miss him in that way. He is a very good bowler and a world-class player. Not having to face him is definitely a relief.”
Despite Shakib’s absence, Markram is aware of the strength of the current Bangladesh squad, particularly their capable spinners, especially in home conditions. He emphasized, “There is no doubt we are facing a tough challenge. A difficult and exciting few days lie ahead.”
Regarding how South Africa plans to tackle the challenging conditions, Markram said, “We want to play good cricket and perform well against spin. We aim to adapt to these conditions and string together several good sessions to achieve a positive result, but it won’t be easy. These conditions are quite different for us.”
