Virat Kohli's Record Among Openers with Lowest Averages in T20 World Cup
In the 2024 T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli and Tanzid Hasan Tamim recorded some of the lowest batting averages for openers, placing them first and second respectively for this dubious distinction in the history of the tournament. However, the record for the lowest average by an opener remains with Soumya Sarkar from the 2016 T20 World Cup. The list also includes Tamim Iqbal, who had a low average in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
Soumya Sarkar (Bangladesh, 2016)
Soumya Sarkar holds the unfortunate record for the lowest batting average among openers in T20 World Cup history. During the 2016 tournament held in India, he played 5 matches as an opener and scored only 48 runs at an average of 9.60. Due to his poor form, Soumya was demoted from the opening position for Bangladesh's last two matches in the tournament.
Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh, 2007)
In the 2007 T20 World Cup, Tamim Iqbal managed to score 56 runs in 5 matches at an average of 11.20. His performance was highlighted by a single match with a strike rate above 100, scoring 8 runs off 7 balls against South Africa.
Virat Kohli (India, 2024)
Virat Kohli had a challenging tournament in 2024, scoring just 75 runs in 7 matches at an average of 10.71. His highest score was 37 against Bangladesh. Notably, in five out of seven innings, Kohli failed to score more than 10 runs, marking the lowest average for an Indian batsman in T20 World Cup history.
Tanzid Hasan Tamim (Bangladesh, 2024)
Following closely behind Kohli, Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored 76 runs in 7 matches at an average of 10.85. Both Kohli and Tanzid's performances highlight the difficulties faced by openers in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
