Shariful is ready, but Bangladesh will not break the winning combination
Shoriful Islam, who injured his hand during a practice match against India, missed Bangladesh's first World Cup game and is unlikely to play against South Africa today. Although Shoriful is fit and bowled in practice sessions, head coach Chandika Hathurusingha hinted that the team might retain the winning combination.
In New York, Shoriful was the most successful bowler for Bangladesh against India. He sustained a hand injury, receiving six stitches, and has been resting at the team hotel since then. However, he participated in an optional practice session before the South Africa match and bowled comfortably.
Regarding Shoriful's readiness, Hathurusingha gave an encouraging update in the pre-match press conference:
"He (Shoriful) went to the field today and bowled. He is fine to bowl. He bowled without any issues today. Hopefully, he will be ready to play after today."
Despite Shoriful's fitness, the Bangladesh team management is hesitant to alter the winning combination from their match against Sri Lanka, showing confidence in the current squad:
"We will try to gauge how the pitch is likely to behave. We know South Africa's strengths and our strengths. You might see a similar team, depending on our best combination."
Hathurusingha expressed confidence in his team, noting the challenging conditions for batters in New York:
"It's not easy for the batters here. As a result, both teams are on an equal footing. South Africa has a great bowling attack. We are still confident that we can put up a good fight on this wicket."
Bangladesh aims to continue their winning momentum, relying on the players who delivered a victory against Sri Lanka, while Shoriful waits for his opportunity to return to the playing eleven.
