Mehidy Hasan Miraz Appointed New ODI Captain of Bangladesh
All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been named the new captain of Bangladesh's One Day International (ODI) team. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed his appointment ahead of the upcoming Sri Lanka series, marking the beginning of a new leadership era in the 50-over format. Miraz will lead the team for the next 12 months.
Miraz, 26, has played 105 ODIs so far, scoring 1,617 runs and taking 110 wickets. His consistent performances with both bat and ball, coupled with his leadership qualities, have earned him the captaincy during a transitional phase for the national side.
With this decision, Bangladesh now has separate captains for all three formats: Najmul Hossain Shanto leads the Test side, Litton Das captains the T20 team, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz takes charge of the ODI squad.
The three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, scheduled for July 2, 5, and 8, will be Miraz's first assignment as full-time captain. It will also mark Bangladesh's return to ODI cricket after last featuring in the 2023 Champions Trophy qualifiers.
BCB's Cricket Operations Committee Chairman, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, explained the rationale behind Miraz's selection:
“His consistent all-round performance, his ability to inspire teammates, and his energetic presence both on and off the field make him the ideal candidate to lead the ODI side during this transition period.”
Reacting to his appointment, Miraz said,
“It's a great honor for any cricketer to lead their country. I'm grateful to the board for the trust they’ve placed in me. I have full belief in this team—we want to play bold, confident cricket and feel proud to represent Bangladesh.”
As the Tigers prepare for a fresh start under new leadership, all eyes will be on how Miraz handles the challenges ahead and guides Bangladesh into a new chapter in ODI cricket.
