Many thought Mahmudullah Riyad’s T20 career was over after being dropped from the 2022 T20 World Cup squad. However, he proved everyone wrong by preparing himself in such a way that he not only made it to the 2024 World Cup squad but also secured a spot in the main eleven. But does Riyad feel bad about being left out of the 2022 World Cup? His answer reveals his perspective.

From 2007 to 2021, Mahmudullah Riyad was part of the Bangladesh squad for the first seven T20 World Cups. However, he was not included in the 2022 T20 World Cup squad. Riyad spoke about this in the “The Green Red Story” published on the BCB’s verified Facebook page on Wednesday morning.

"When I wasn't in the 2022 T20 World Cup squad, I felt bad. I thought I could have been in the team. But it didn't happen, and I have no regrets about that. I always say Alhamdulillah, whatever I can do for the team, be it through my presence, performance, or experience, I always give my utmost."

In recent years, Riyad has experienced many ups and downs in his career. He was dropped from several series, and there was uncertainty about his place in the ODI World Cup squad. Speaking about these fluctuations, Riyad said,

"Ups and downs have always been a part of my career. I always believe in Allah. Whatever I have to say, I say it to Allah. I always believe that Allah is the best planner. Every good and bad time has something to teach us—that's what I believe."

At 38 years old, it's clear that the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup is likely to be the last World Cup of Riyad's career. Naturally, he would want to end on a high note with his best performance. However, in "The Green Red Story," Riyad emphasized that his focus is on the team rather than personal goals.

"I have never thought about my name. I don't think much about personal goals. If the team's objectives are achieved, I am very happy with that."

Speaking about playing for the national team, Mahmudullah said,

"Representing the national team, whether in a series or a mega event, is always special. Whenever I get the new jersey, it always feels very good."

Regarding Bangladesh’s supporters, Mahmudullah mentioned, "Our people are very passionate. They watch the game with a lot of emotion. They want us to do well. Considering everything, that Allah has brought me this far, it is a lot, Alhamdulillah."
