Jacob Bethell is set to open the batting in England’s upcoming three-match ODI series against India. The decision is also seen as a possible indication that England may consider promoting him to the Test opening role in the future. England have also handed maiden call-ups to James Coles and Josh Tongue.

England have been experimenting extensively with Ben Duckett’s opening partner in ODI cricket. Since the start of last year, Duckett has had four different opening partners. Phil Salt was dropped after the Champions Trophy, while his replacement, Jamie Smith, averaged only 26.11 in nine innings before being left out. In the most recent ODI series against Sri Lanka, Zak Crawley opened the batting but managed just six runs in his only innings. Rehan Ahmed was even used as a pinch-hitter during the series.

This time, England have placed their faith in the 21-year-old Bethell. He has previously opened the batting in 50-over cricket for both England Under-19s and England Lions. Although he currently bats at No. 3 in the Test side, England could also consider him as a future Test opener.

England’s reshaped batting order is expected to feature Joe Root, captain Harry Brook and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler at No. 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Will Jacks will continue in the middle order after his impressive performances at the T20 World Cup. The team management will then decide whether to strengthen the batting with Tom Banton or opt for an additional bowling option.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer returns to England’s ODI squad after being rested during January’s series against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue gives England a pace attack that closely resembles the one used in their recent Test campaign. Saqib Mahmood has also returned after recovering from a knee injury.

On the other hand, Brydon Carse has been ruled out with a hand injury, while Jamie Overton is unavailable due to a quadriceps injury. The return of spin-bowling all-rounder Liam Dawson is seen as part of England’s long-term planning for the 2027 World Cup.

India have also named a strong squad for the series, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah all included, subject to fitness. The three-match ODI series will begin at Edgbaston on July 14, followed by matches in Cardiff on July 16 and at Lord’s on July 19.

England ODI squad: Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook (captain), Jos Buttler, James Coles, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Josh Tongue.
