After a disappointing Test series, Bangladesh began their ODI challenge with renewed spirit in Colombo. Taskin Ahmed delivered a superb bowling performance, claiming 4 wickets for just 47 runs in 10 overs, including a maiden over to start the innings.
Sri Lanka, who chose to bat first on the batting-friendly Premadasa pitch, were bowled out for 244 with four deliveries remaining. Captain Charith Asalanka was the standout, scoring a determined 110 off 117 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes), before falling in the final over to Tanzim Hasan Sakib.
Apart from Asalanka’s century, only Kusal Mendis made a meaningful contribution with 45 runs at number three. Asalanka's knock was his second ODI hundred against Bangladesh, following his 108 in the 2023 World Cup in Delhi.
Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling effort, led by Taskin’s fiery spell, has set up a competitive chase in the opening game of the three-match series.
