Australian School introduces cricket as core curriculum subject
Victoria’s Lara Secondary College in Australia has incorporated cricket as an official subject in its curriculum. The aim is to bring cricket education into the classroom across Victoria and to encourage the development of future cricketing talent through elite academies.
Cricket has long been a cornerstone of Australian culture. Australia was part of the first Test match against England in 1877, and both teams will celebrate the 150th anniversary of this historic inaugural Test match in 2027. Australia has achieved the honor of winning six World Cups, a T20 World Cup, and the Test Championship title.
According to a report by ABC Sports, Lara Secondary College in Victoria is the first institution to introduce cricket as an official subject rather than just an extracurricular activity. This reflects the nation's deep-rooted passion for the sport, which is why they have implemented cricket as a new primary subject.
The goal of this historic initiative is to teach students about cricket across schools in Victoria. Schools will offer cricket-focused electives for students in grades 9 and 10, and certification in sports and recreation for students in grades 11 and 12. Additionally, schools in Victoria will provide specialized cricket training up to grade 7.
